Hydroelectric power plant in Kerlingarfjöll – locally manufactured green energy for local use!

Kerlingarfjöll and vicinity is among the most unique and beautiful places in Iceland.

It should also be noted that the highlands center is operated with a focus on sustainability and the use of green power sources. In this regard, the highlands center is among the best in Iceland and elsewhere.

Travel agencies seldom produce their own environmentally friendly geothermal energy and hydropower in their operations. On the other hand, that is the case with the highland center in Kerlingarfjöll!

The highland center

  • Provides heat for all the guesthouses and service centers with the use of hot water from its own drill hole. The geothermal heat was put into use in 2013.
  • Produces electric power all year round in its own hydroelectric power plant in Kerlingjarfjöll for its operation and also sells the electric power to the Icelandic State for its emergency mobile phone transmitters in the vicinity. The plant was expanded and refurbished in 2013.
  • Uses drinking water from its own drill hole.

In the winter of 2014-2015 there were couple of groups from Germany and The United States in Kerlingarfjöll to experience Icelandic nature in its winter dress and watching the glorious Northern Lights over the highlands.

Three kilograms of gas was used for cooking, and it was the only energy that was bought elsewhere that these groups used for their entire three day stay.

The nature at Kerlingarfjöll is unique and sustainable, the travel agency‘s green power generation is unique as well.
